Breakthru
Breakthru covers hard-hitting issues that the team, and Council, feel are important such as bullying, teenage pregnancy and drug abuse. The Youth Service and Communications Team support the editorial team, young people make the final decisions, produce the publication and take responsibility for deciding what articles and pictures to include.
A feedback mechanism has been built into the production to allow young people to contribute views and ideas. The magazine is able to respond to the views of its readership and adapts to meet their needs. It was found, for example, that the age group of 11-17 was too wide to cater for all ages. To overcome this young people decided to produce articles specifically for age groups 11-13 and other articles for the 14-17 audience. The editorial team now work in two groups that focus on each section.
Involvement in Breakthru is voluntary and allows young people to develop their personal and social skills and experience. Young people undertake a series of media related training courses that they receive accreditation for. It also gives young people the opportunity to meet other young people from different backgrounds
